For more than 25 years, the festival has been centering feminist perspectives in the world of animated film and cultural work, holding an important position within the international festival landscape. Besides multiple competition programs and programs featuring up and coming animators, the festival presents curated programs, retrospectives, and various discursive formats, creating space to engage with innovative art from Austria and around the world while fostering a community around it.

Tricky Women Tricky Realities wants to emphasize the transformative potential of animation, engaging with works and artists that rearrange familiar structures of storytelling, that speak to present-day urgencies, while imagining new languages for collective engagement as well as alternatives to the world as it exists today.

The beginnings of Tricky Women Tricky Realities date back to the founding of the Tricky Women Festival by Waltraud Grausgruber, Antonio Cicero, and Birgitt Wagner in 2000. Waltraud Grausgruber directed the festival for 25 years - together with Birgitt Wagner until 2020 - , the organization of the festival editions 2001–2026 was handled by the association Culture2Culture.

Since 2026 Tricky Women Tricky Realities is organized by Tricky Matters - Verein zur Förderung von unabhängiger Animationskunst, Experimentalfilm und feministischer Kinokultur
