Mara Chavez is a Mexican-Austrian filmmaker whose work traces diasporic histories and the dis/appearances of narratives within colonial image worlds. Using animation and open-source digital tools, she treats material and landscape as sites where history continues to speak. Mara has a background in documentary from Goldsmiths and media/film & art from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She has received the BMKÖS Film and Art Stipend and the Superrr Lab Berlin Fellowship for Déchoukaj, a collaborative research project exploring how Caribbean communities contend with the material and immaterial legacies of colonialism. Alongside her artistic practice, she is a community organiser at Gewächshaus, a Vienna-based BIPoC film network, and a member of RIPE, Austria’s first production company founded and led by filmmakers of color. Across networks in Austria and Latin America, she facilitates workshops, screenings, and conversations on filmmaking with a focus on accessibility and experimentation.
